Cryotherapy
Dermatological Cryotherapy: How Does It Work?
Dermatological cryotherapy is a local treatment that involves the use of liquid nitrogen directly on the area affected by the skin alteration, through a special instrument that allows for precise delivery.
Nitrogen is a colorless, odorless gas that, in its liquid state, reaches a temperature of approximately -196°C. Its application, therefore, causes a rapid drop in temperature, below freezing. This thermal shock destroys the cells responsible for the lesions, thus allowing the skin problem to resolve.
Duration of treatment
The treatment lasts a few minutes, and if the lesion is superficial, a single session may be sufficient for complete resolution. If the lesion is thicker, multiple applications may be necessary. This is determined by the specialist based on the nature of the lesion, its size, and the number of alterations to be treated.
How is cryotherapy performed?
In cryotherapy, nitrogen applications last a few seconds and cause a burning sensation, relieved by the anesthetic action of the cold. This burning sensation may increase over the following minutes, then gradually decrease over the course of an hour.
