Ultrasound is a diagnostic investigation method that uses ultrasound (very high frequency sounds).
Ultrasound is a non-invasive test, free of risks and side effects; it has no contraindications.
It is a diagnostic technique that can be applied in numerous specialties. Being a simple test, with no contraindications for the patient, it increasingly constitutes the initial approach to most pathologies.
The advantages of this test are many: it is harmless to the patient and can be repeated many times in a short period of time.
In many cases (such as in the study of the heart and abdominal and superficial organs such as the thyroid, testicles, muscles and vessels) it is very precise and sensitive and is often able to highlight even very small alterations in the structure of an organ, measuring just a few millimetres.
For some specific cases, upon booking, you will be provided with the necessary instructions to properly prepare for the exam.
Reporting times
Ultrasound scans are performed by appointment.
The ultrasound scan is reported immediately and the report, along with the images, is given to the patient as soon as the examination is completed.
Preparation for Ultrasound
UPPER ABDOMINAL / HEPATOLOGY – BILIARY / RENAL / PANCREATIC / SPLENIC ULTRASOUND
For this type of ultrasound, you must fast for at least 6 hours.
THYROID ULTRASOUND
No specific preparation is required for this type of ultrasound. Always remember to bring any previous tests performed and all medical records related to your thyroid.
BREAST ULTRASOUND
No specific preparation is required for this type of ultrasound. During the exam, you will need to remain uncovered. Always remember to bring any previous tests (ultrasounds, mammograms) with you.
PELVIC ULTRASOUND / PROSTATE BLADDER / LOWER ABDOMEN
For a proper assessment of the bladder and lower abdomen, it is advisable to present for the exam with a moderately distended bladder. It is therefore recommended that you completely empty your bladder (go to the bathroom and urinate) one hour before the exam and drink 1/45 liter of still water 3 minutes beforehand (children and patients with heart or kidney disease who are subject to fluid restrictions are excluded; they should consult their doctor regarding this).
Always bring your previous tests with you. Once you start drinking, you should stop urinating.
COMPLETE ABDOMINAL ULTRASOUND
On the day of the exam, fast for 5-6 hours beforehand. For a proper assessment of the bladder and lower abdomen, it is recommended to completely empty your bladder (go to the bathroom and urinate) one hour before the exam and drink 1/45 liter of still water 3 minutes beforehand (children and patients with heart or kidney disease who are subject to fluid restrictions are excluded; they should consult their doctor about this).
Always bring previous exams.
TRANSVAGINAL ULTRASOUND
No special preparation is required for this exam.
TRANSRECTAL ULTRASOUND
The transrectal exam is performed by inserting a probe into the rectum. The exam is painless and generally well tolerated.
For this test, it is advisable to perform a micro-enema (you can buy them ready-made at the pharmacy) a few hours beforehand to ensure a good cleansing of the rectum.
MUSCLE, TENDON, JOINT, AND SKIN ULTRASOUND
No specific preparation is required for this type of ultrasound; always remember to bring any previous tests performed and all clinical documentation pertaining to the area to be examined.
ECHODOPPLER OF THE LIMBS AND SUPRA-AORTIC TRUNKS
No preparation is required for these tests; always remember to bring any previous tests performed and all clinical documentation pertaining to the area to be examined.
OBSTETRIC ULTRASOUND
XNUMXst trimesterFor these ultrasounds, you must arrive at the exam with a very full bladder; therefore, you must drink at least a liter of water, which should be finished about 45 minutes before the scheduled exam time. Once you begin drinking, you should not urinate. You can empty your bladder immediately after the exam. Compression of the probe on a full bladder is quite uncomfortable, but the exam only lasts a few minutes.
XNUMXnd trimester: no special preparation is required for this ultrasound.
Remember to always bring with you all previous ultrasound scans performed during your current pregnancy; without them, the exam cannot be performed.
