Collection and storage of biological samples

Urine collection

For the execution of the standard urine test A small amount of fluid (about half a glass) collected during the first morning urination is sufficient. If not bringing your own, the sample can be collected at the clinic restrooms. The urine sample must be collected in special containers provided by the clinic staff, your GP, or the pharmacy. Samples collected in "recycled" containers, even if thoroughly washed, will not be accepted.
  • Discard the urine from the first urination of the first day
  • Collect all urine for the day, including that of the night and that of the first urination on the second day.
The collection must be carried out for 3 consecutive days.

Every day we proceed as follows:

  • Discard the first urine of the morning.
  • After the first urination, drink a large glass of water every half hour for the next 2 hours.
  • Thorough intimate hygiene.
  • Collect the urine sample to be analyzed approximately 2 hours after the first urination.
  • Urine must be collected in the appropriate container provided by the analysis laboratory.
  • Mark each container with your NAME, SURNAME and COLLECTION DATE.
  • NOT Store urine in the refrigerator but at room temperature until delivery.
  • The collection containers contain toxic liquid that must not be ingested and must be left in the containers themselves.

Unless otherwise specified, it is recommended to collect midstream morning urine or urine at least three hours after the last void. Collection containers must be sterile and disposable.

Please note: antibiotic or chemotherapy treatments may interfere with the results of the test.

Intermediate mitto collection (female sex)

Wash your hands with soap and water and dry them. Thoroughly wash the urethral opening and surrounding area with soap and water, rinse with water, and dry. Keep the labia majora apart while urinating. Pass out the first portion of urine without collecting it. Collect the second portion directly in the sterile container. Close the container carefully so that the urine does not leak during transport.

Intermediate mit collection (male sex)

Wash your hands with soap and water and dry them. Retract the foreskin, thoroughly wash the urethral opening and surrounding area with soap and water. Keeping the foreskin retracted, void the first portion of the urine without collecting it. Collect the second portion directly in the sterile container. Close the container carefully so that the urine does not leak during transport.

Sterile adhesive plastic bag for small children

When midstream urine collection is not possible (not recommended due to the risk of contamination), encourage the child to drink abundantly. Clean the external genitalia and surrounding area with soap and water, rinse thoroughly, and dry. Apply the bag, ensuring it adheres to the area around the genitals. If no urination occurs after 60 minutes, remove the bag and replace it, repeating the washing procedure. As soon as urination occurs, remove the bag and carefully transfer it to a sterile container. Delivery to the laboratory must be made as quickly as possible; if more than 2 hours and up to 4 hours pass, keep the container refrigerated at 0-4°C.

Stool collection

Stool samples are collected for occult blood and parasite testing and for stool cultures and other tests.

The sample is collected in special containers provided free of charge by the Polyclinic, which provides information on how to use it by providing an information leaflet.

It is advisable to collect a stool sample for three consecutive days.

  • Do not take aspirin or drugs containing acetylsalicylic acid in the 3 days prior to collection.
  • Free diet.

Because some parasites are shed intermittently, for accurate results, it's advisable to perform a parasitological examination on at least three stool samples from different days (preferably on alternate days, and in any case within a 3-day period). If an amoebic infection is suspected, it's advisable to examine more than three hot samples (with evacuation at the Outpatient Clinic). If the patient observes adult worms in the stool, they should be sent to the laboratory in containers containing alcohol or water for identification.

The patient must evacuate into a clean container. They must then dip a swab, which can be collected from the laboratory, into the stool so that some of it remains adhered, and then insert it into the swab collection tube. It is recommended to collect a sample the same morning. If this is not possible, stool from the previous day, stored in the refrigerator, can be provided.

Sputum collection

  • Material for collection: sterile wide-mouth container, available in the laboratory.
  • Collection method: Collect the sputum in the morning on an empty stomach. Remove any dentures, thoroughly clean your mouth, and gargle with sterile distilled water. Collect sputum after coughing and check that it is free of saliva.
  • Number of samples collection: A single sample is generally sufficient for bacterial pneumonia caused by common germs. For the diagnosis of tuberculosis infection, three samples collected on consecutive mornings are recommended.
